Lunch time Lectures 2007/2008
 
The Curators of Winchester Military Museums present their annual programme of lunchtime lectures.
 

On 4 October 2007 –

Major Gerald Davies, Curator The Gurkha Museum will talk on “The Gurkhas in the Mutiny 1857 - 1859”. A lecture highlighting the part played by the Gurkhas during the Mutiny and the changes to the Army of India with the abolition of the East India Company.

On 15 November 2007 –

 

Mike Curtis served with the Trucial Oman Scouts during the 1960s and will talk on “Sand & Sun – Operations with the Trucial Oman Scouts in the 1960s”

 

On 13 December 2007 –

Mr Ian Bailey, Curator of The Adjutant General’s Corps Museum will talk on “The Regimental Pay Office Hong Kong 1941 – 1945”. A lecture recording the activities of the staff of RPO during the Japanese attack in December 1941, their surrender and subsequent activities organising financial services within Shamshuipo prison camp.

 

On 17 January 2008 –

 

Rev Andrew Totten MBE, a Trustee of the Museum of Army Chaplaincy and a serving member of the Royal Army Chaplain’s Department will talk on ‘Military Chaplaincy: past and present’.

On 14 February 2008 –

 

Major Ken Gray, Curator of the Rifles Museum will talk on ‘Hero’s – A selection of VC actions during the 19th and 20th Century’.

On 13 March 2008 –

Major Patrick Beresford, recent curator of HorsePower, The Museum of The King’s Royal Hussars will talk on “Byng of Vimy, General and Governor-General” , the life of a 10th Hussar officer, who rode in the Charge at El Teb in 1884, fought in the Boer Wars, Commanded the Canadian Corps at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and went on to become Governor General of Canada from 1921 to 1926.

All talks will be given in the Gurkha Museum, McDonald Gallery, Peninsula Barracks starting at 12.45pm and will last between 30 – 40 minutes. After the talk sandwiches and a cash bar are available. Tickets for the talk are £5.00 per person, to include a sandwich, but NOT drinks. These are available from The Gurkha Museum, Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Road, Winchester SO23 8TS (Telephone: 01962 842832). Cheques should be made payable to Winchester Military Museums. Refunds can only be given for cancellations received by 4pm on the Monday preceding the talk. Note that talks are on Thursdays. Telephone bookings are only taken up to Tuesday of the week of the lecture.
